Dawn in the Desert- The New Hotel Artesia
All that Southeastern New Mexico has had to offer to experienced travelers is the tired and typical trail of Western Best and Comfort Lodges. Until now. The newly reborn hotel Artesia serves up a sumptuous and unique hotel experience sure to please even the most discerning traveler. Tile from Italy, marble from China and Art Deco styling in exhilarating colors work to provide an experience that is both exciting and classic. The New Hotel Artesia has all the smart comforts of a well designed hotel room, including plenty of places to plug things in! It's an unexpected find, a crowning achievement in the resurgence of Mainstreet Artesia and a feather in the cap of New Mexico Hospitality.
The concept, development and construction of the New Hotel Artesia is a fascinating story. The New Hotel Artesia is the brain child of architect Richard Yates, an Artesia local. Yates is known for his colorful and creative projects and designed the New Hotel Artesia in an Art Deco Theme. The Yates family has been involved with the Hotel Artesia since it's original inception. Richard Yates brings his family history full circle with the reconstruction of the New Hotel Artesia.
The Hotel Artesia project was orchestrated by Zydeco Real Estate Management of Santa Fe, New Mexico. President Richard Hefler and Project Manager Joy Barr have created a powerful team; whose members leave a deep mark in the Hotel Artesia. They have been responsible all the way from the first plans to the day to day running of the hotel itself.
The job of interpreting Richard Yates ideas and designs fell on the capable shoulders of Architect Aaron Bohrer of Archiscape, LLC a Santa Fe Architectural firm. Aaron states that "the new Hotel Artesia is a testament to the professionalism of the New Mexico construction community." This professionalism is personified in the Construction firm of Reid and Associates from Albuquerque New Mexico. Reid and Associates were the only builders able to keep the original floor and design plans within the available budget. Heidi Steele of Interior Design Sevices of Santa Fe New Mexico is responsible for the beautiful colors and textures that make the Lobby a showcase of beautiful design. The efficiency of contractors and Reid and Associates allowed the Hotel Artesia to use marble, wood and sumptuous bathroom vanities. Larry Reetz construction contributed to the green effort, using only minimal cuts in the wood. This allowed the team to "save electricity, time and create less particulate matter in the job environment."
The Hotel Artesia is a Green Hotel on a budget. When faced with a challenging budget and the realization that funding to be LEED certified wasn't in the works the team together to create a greener hotel in whatever way they could. Smart choices such as orientation of the building, good insulations, color selections to reflect rather than absorb heat, shaded portals, recessed windows to deflect bright sun and low VOC paint all contribute to keeping the Hotel Artesia green friendly. Water efficient toilets and bathtubs help to conserve the precious resource in this high desert environment. LEED strategies are present, such as bike racks, easy access to public transportation and landscaping with trees that will provide shade in the future. Milgard efficient windows and non-toxic Qyp-Crete help with efficiency and lower toxic emissions. Guests can rest assured that they are helping to support a green Hotel.
