Hotel Saint Francis
The historic Hotel Saint Francis has undergone many transformations, from its original incarnation as the De Vargas hotel in the 1880's, to its newest form that embodies the name of the Hotel Saint Francis. Remodeled in the monastic style according to the vision of Jim Long, owner of Heritage Hotels and Resorts. Rather than reverting to typical hotel design schemes and decoration, Heritage Hotels and Resorts work hard to capture the essences of tradition.
The concept of hotel as monastery goes further than a simple design idea. From the minimalist color palette to the exceptional wine selection, true Franciscan influence dominates. Designer Kris Lajeskie has been the instrumental force in giving the hotel its authentic austere ambiance. Richard Martnez a local Architect from Santa Fe discussed the challenges he faced modernizing the Historic Hotel to bring it up to today's standards. Two of the largest challenges for the Architect on this project were bringing the elevator to the same level as the lobby with ADA qualifications and interestingly enough the other taxing endeavor was to create an island of calm for the Santa Fe traveler in the sometimes hectic area near the plaza. Any one who has been to the Hotel Saint Francis will attest to Richard's success. Many other New Mexican artisans contributed to the construction of the Hotel Saint Francis. From Leonel Capparelli's bar to Orae Dominguez's tinwork light fixtures, traditional New Mexican craftsmanship shines through.
While the Hotel Saint Francis embodies the serenity and purity of a true monastery, it has all of the modern amenities that hotel visitors have come to expect. Each of the 81 guestrooms is comfortably furnished in the Fransiscan style. In addition to the usual amenities the Hotel Saint Francis includes some more unusual accommodations including a small chapel, a reading room, two person soaking room, and a modern exercise area focusing on quiet exercise.
Dining within the Hotel Saint Francis includes a full service restaurant, bar and afternoon tea. All feature fresh local foods from the imagination of Chef Estevan Garcia, a former Franciscan monk and owner of (now closed) Café San Estevan. The bar menu harkens back to the first days of the Hotel Saint Francis with a menu of pre-Prohibition era cocktails as well as locally inspired seasonal drinks. Guests can take advantage of the Friar's Table; an event in which local monks share a meal with diners interested in New Mexican history.
Like all Heritage Hotels and Resorts, Hotel St. Francis is commited to ecological consciousness. From restaurants featuring seasonal and locally grown foods to the use of xeriscape landscaping and eco-friendly dishes, Heritage Hotels and Resorts provide environmentally sound alternatives without sacrificing any of the comfort and cleanliness that guests expect.
